Brie, Prosciutto and Caramelised Onion Stuffed Croissants

When it comes to indulgent snacks or a luxurious brunch option, stuffed croissants are a showstopper. One of the most mouthwatering combinations involves creamy Brie, salty prosciutto, and sweet caramelised onions. This heavenly mix wrapped in a buttery, flaky croissant is an explosion of flavour that’s surprisingly easy to make at home. This recipe is certain to bring your brunch game up to the next level!

The Symphony of Flavours

Brie: The star of the show is undoubtedly the Brie cheese. Known for its creamy texture and mild, buttery flavour, Brie melts beautifully inside a warm croissant. As it bakes, it becomes gooey and decadent, providing a rich contrast to the other ingredients.

Prosciutto: Prosciutto, with its delicate saltiness, adds a layer of sophistication to the croissant. The slightly chewy texture of this dry-cured ham balances the softness of the Brie, creating a delightful bite.

Caramelised Onions: The finishing touch is caramelised onions. Slowly cooked until golden brown and sweet, these onions bring a depth of flavour that ties everything together. Their sweetness complements the saltiness of the prosciutto and the richness of the Brie, making each bite a perfect blend of savoury and sweet. To make even easier, I’ve used a shop bought caramelised onion chutney.

How to make them

Despite their gourmet appeal, these croissants are incredibly easy to make. All you need is:

  • Fresh croissants (store-bought or homemade)
  • Brie cheese, sliced
  • Thin slices of prosciutto
  • Caramelised onions (which can be made ahead of time) or can use shop bought chutney

Steps:

  1. Preheat Your Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 175°C
  2. Prepare the Croissants: Slice the croissants in half, but don’t cut all the way through. You want them to stay connected, making it easier to stuff them.
  3. Layer the Ingredients: Place a slice of Brie inside each croissant, followed by a few slices of prosciutto. Top it off with a generous spoonful of caramelised onions.
  4. Bake: Place the stuffed croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake them in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the Brie is melted and the croissants are warm and crispy.
  5. Serve: Serve immediately, and enjoy the warm, melted goodness.

Alternative Flavour Combinations

The beauty of stuffed croissants lies in their versatility. If Brie, prosciutto, and caramelised onions aren’t your thing, or if you’re looking to experiment with different flavours, here are some other savoury combinations to try:

  1. Ham, Gruyère, and Dijon Mustard: For a classic French twist, stuff your croissant with sliced ham, Gruyère cheese, and a spread of Dijon mustard. The mustard adds a tangy kick, while Gruyère melts into a nutty, creamy delight.
  2. Smoked Salmon, Cream Cheese, and Dill: This combination is perfect for a brunch treat. Smoked salmon offers a subtle smokiness, while the cream cheese provides a rich base. A sprinkle of fresh dill adds a burst of freshness.
  3. Spinach, Feta, and Sun-Dried Tomatoes: For a Mediterranean flair, try stuffing your croissant with sautéed spinach, crumbled feta, and chopped sun-dried tomatoes. The feta adds a tangy, salty bite, while the sun-dried tomatoes bring sweetness and depth.
  4. Goat Cheese, Honey, and Walnuts: This is a more adventurous combination, blending the tangy creaminess of goat cheese with the sweetness of honey and the crunch of toasted walnuts. Perfect for those who enjoy a sweet-savory balance.
  5. Mushrooms, Swiss Cheese, and Thyme: Sautéed mushrooms with melted Swiss cheese and a hint of fresh thyme create a comforting, earthy filling that’s perfect for a chilly day.

Stuffed croissants, particularly with Brie, prosciutto, and caramelised onions, offer a quick yet decadent way to elevate any meal. Whether you’re hosting a brunch or simply indulging in a special treat for yourself, these croissants are sure to impress. And with so many alternative flavour combinations, you can easily tailor this concept to suit any palate or occasion. So, why not give it a try? Your taste buds will thank you.
